Instead, it's therapy. "It's not just a shower. It's a mood enhancer," says Gary Pember, Moen's group product manager for the bath. "Where people used to go to a spa to pamper themselves, now they want to integrate those features into their own homes. It's part of looking at the whole therapeutic value to water. Drew Shepard, senior director of consumer insights for Marriott Hotels , spends copious amounts of time listening to travelers: in 2010 and 2011 combined he interviewed more than 7,000 hotel guests in person or through surveys to inform the renovations now underway at Marriott. “The bathroom is a really important signal for a bunch of things,” he said. “You hope it’s a little aspirational, a little better than what you have at home. A little fun.” And it’s the little things, he said, that add up, which is why Marriott is not only renovating but also investing in things like thicker towels and a new amenity brand (from a Thai company called Thann ). A prominent Christian leader suggests the ongoing issue of transgendered people and public restrooms is about more than where people should potty.  "When you pull up your anchor and you have no moral compass that says true north, then increasingly you lose the ability to understand what's normal," warns Dr. Richard Land, who leads Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. Land is commenting about so-called "bathroom bills" and transgendered people, a cultural battle in which some state governments have reacted to the relatively new controversy of mentally ill men stating they are women and demanding access to women's restrooms and locker rooms. I’m a lucky duck and have been staying at some really posh hotels lately. Not just posh in terms of price and number of pillows; but posh in terms of properties where the staff is truly friendly, helpful and attentive to details that can really count when you’re out on the road. Like the handful of bite-size end-of-the-day chocolates I was given when I checked into a Staybridge Hotel earlier this week in Elkhart, Indiana. And the complimentary pot of strong coffee that showed up outside my door at 6 am at an Omni Hotel in Indianapolis, even though I only signed up for the free program that offers that amenity (and free Wi-Fi) the night before.
