House Tour: A Clever Kids' Bedroom & Bathroom Makeover

Names: Finley (4-years-old) and Jackson (5 1/2 years old) Location: Seattle, Washington Room sizes: Bathroom - 47 square feet; Finley's Room - 100 square feet; Jackson's Room -130 square feet The adorable Finley and Jackson of Finley and Jackson's "Modern Shabby-Chic" Bedrooms & Playrooms are back with new and improved big kid bedrooms and bathroom. Their mom, Emily, had been thinking about adding a bathroom to the upper level of their home for years. The house—Emily and Kai's Thoughtful and Stunning Seattle Home —came with only 1.5 bathrooms when they purchased it six years ago, and the only shower/bathtub was in the master bathroom. Now that the kids are getting older (Finley is almost 4 years old and Jackson is 5 ½) and out of diapers, it's clear that they need their own bathroom. In order to add it, both bedrooms needed a new floor plan—this is what Emily came up with! Emily and Kai's home is a little over 1600 square feet, and there is...

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?  The answer is, as much as you want it to.  There are many, many choices for tile and that will drive most projects.  But there are some things that will be factors in all remodeling jobs. You are going to need a plumber.  The plumber will install new fixtures (shower heads, faucets, etc.) which will involve installing the new valves that are necessary.  This will require two visits to the job site.  The plumber will also install a new shower pan (waterproof lining) on the floor of the shower.  Expect these services to cost at least $600.00.  Some of the cost will depend on the size of the shower pan.  The last bathroom job I completed was renovation of two bathrooms.  This client spent over $1000.00 on the plumbing.  But that job involved installing a shower pan, installing two new shower heads and their valves, three faucets and their valves, three new toilets and hooking up three new sinks.  That’s a lot of work. The cost of new fixtures...

Silicone fails bathroom in multiple ways

Q. We have a shower stall, with ceramic tiles on the walls and floor, which was installed by the previous homeowner about seven years ago. Within a year of moving in, some of the grout started to come loose in various places in the shower. We assumed that it hadn't been properly sealed , so we had a company called The Grout Doctor come out to patch it up. At that time, the company filled in the grout and then placed some kind of silicon- type clear caulk at the joint where the wall and floor come together. We continued to have grout come loose in other places that had not been repaired, so we had the same company come out again. It re-grouted and replaced the silicone caulk -- this time putting the caulk in all of the joints -- where the walls meet, where the walls and floor meet, and where the shower door meets walls and floor. After about one year, black mold started growing in multiple spots underneath the clear silicone caulk . I assume water is getting trapped bene...

It's form over function at K/BIS

BY ROBERT P. MADER OF CONTRACTOR'S STAFF You're not just washing your hands or a dish, you're living a lifestyle and plumbing manufacturers are happy to help. When the home builders met in Orlando, Fla., in January, their show was all about function (April, pg. 39) . The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show , on the contrary, is all about pizzazz. While the show covers everything one will find in a kitchen or bathroom, the 60,000 designers, contractors and remodelors at this year's show in April in Chicago saw plenty of plumbing products . High-tech plumbing Kohler has entered the programmable shower market with its DTV custom showering system . Featuring the DTV Digital Interface and DTV Digital Shower Valve , the product offers customized shower experiences with multiple showerheads, hand showers and body sprays. The DTV's pre- set hydrotherapy experiences include up, down and wave massage, as well as temperature therapy that can ...
