8 steps to an eclectic bathroom

Catchpole & Rye's 'Sentinel' shower bath (from £36,000) is based on a 1900s Edwardian design 1  Add A Statement Shower Every home should have a shower, and while purists might prefer the antique, James Lentaigne of Drummonds, points to the need to ' ensure quality and efficiency.' He recommends period-inspired designs rather than actual antiques. Exposed surface - mounted systems teamed with oversized shower heads offer classical styling with minimal damage to walls – a real bonus for older or listed properties – and work surprisingly well with minimal enclosures and wet-room screens for that eclectic lived -in look.  For a traditional take on the modern wet-room, look to 19th-century France; the birthplace of an enclosure made purely from perforated brass pipework that delivers water from all sides and now replicated by companies such as Catchpole & Rye and The Water Monopoly. Alternatively, opt for a classic freestanding shower or check out the glori...

Bathtubs are out, big showers are in

Shutterstock.com The shower gets more use than the bathtub in many households. That’s why some homeowners are ripping out their tubs completely, creating bigger showers instead. Extra shower space allows for multiple shower heads , a built-in seat and designs without shower doors, said John Petrie, president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, in an email interview about current kitchen and bath trends. They can be designed without a threshold — which look more contemporary and are easier for people to use as they get older. “People really like the bigger showers . They like that there’s elbow room,” said Susie Johnson, a real-estate agent with Coldwell Banker Gundaker in St. Louis. Meanwhile, comments she hears from prospective buyers about whirlpool tubs when walking through a property are often along the lines of: “That’s a nice tub but I don’t take baths,” she said. ...

Whether ritualistic, religious or curative, bathing has always been about more than just personal hygiene, and the modern bathroom is no exception. Not just a functional space, it’s a haven to retreat to after a hard day, somewhere to relax mind and body. The bath is the focal point, so it makes sense to choose one that’s beautiful as well as useful. But with hundreds of shapes, styles and materials available, where do you start? Don’t get into a lather – we’ve found the hottest tubs to suit every budget. Before you buy a bath ‘Never buy a bath on a whim,’ warns Jonathan Carter , marketing manager at Victoria & Albert . ‘To ensure you’re happy with your investment, reserve time for choosing the right one.’ The first things to consider are space and budget, and how much of each you have. Kitchen & Bath Trends 2016

Image
Yesterday I attended the International Builder Show (IBS) and National Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) both taking place simultaneously during Design & Construction Week at the Las Vegas Convention Center , and let me tell you it’s HUGE. There are tens of thousands of people in the industry that attend. All the major brands you can think of are set up booths, it’s a once a year opportunity to see all the new design and home improvement products and also meet with the reps that work for these major brands and I was SO excited to be there. I also attended an influencer presentation on design trends which was insightful (see notes at the bottom). I mingled and photographed what I saw and I was like a kid in a candy store. I’d rather fondle tile and faucets and flooring and cabinets than any other products in the world! I had a press pass and took a ton of pictures so I could share them with you. First here’s a peek at some emerging trends based on products and displays se...
