Well, we updated this bathroom with new wall and floor tile, a new vanity and top, and new plumbing fixtures . Then we framed the mirror and added glass shelves above the toilet—all for less than $3,000. And we did it all with materials purchased at home centers. For this article, we worked with kitchen and bath designer extraordinaire Lori Jo Krengel . The following pages feature Lori Jo 's advice for dramatic bathroom improvements that are easy on the wallet. Lori Jo Krengel is a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer and the president of Kitchens by Krengel, Inc., an award- winning design firm in St. Paul. It's form over function at K/BIS

BY ROBERT P. MADER OF CONTRACTOR'S STAFF You're not just washing your hands or a dish, you're living a lifestyle and plumbing manufacturers are happy to help. When the home builders met in Orlando, Fla., in January, their show was all about function (April, pg. 39) . The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show , on the contrary, is all about pizzazz. While the show covers everything one will find in a kitchen or bathroom, the 60,000 designers, contractors and remodelors at this year's show in April in Chicago saw plenty of plumbing products . High-tech plumbing Kohler has entered the programmable shower market with its DTV custom showering system . Featuring the DTV Digital Interface and DTV Digital Shower Valve , the product offers customized shower experiences with multiple showerheads, hand showers and body sprays. The DTV's pre- set hydrotherapy experiences include up, down and wave massage, as well as temperature therapy that can ...

Turn my tiny bathroom into a spa--with a new bathtub. - remodel

My existing claw foot tub doesn 't fill deep enough. I would like to replace it with a deep soaking tub , of course for the best value possible. Give me your ideas please. The existing claw foot tub came with the house and has the faucet drilled in, and the over flow underneath that, so it doesn't really fill up. This makes bathing in it a cold, uncomfortable experience. I think--and the plumber agrees with me--that the easiest way to fix this is replace the tub with something deeper. First question: How deep should I be looking for? Ideally, it's deep enough that I can easily put my shoulders in the water and keep them there, but I don't have to. I don't want to drown in the tub, but too much depth is better than too little, since I don't HAVE to fill up the tub. I'm 5'2", my partner is 5'10". Second question: Are there keywords I should be looking for? I've tried "soaking" tub, but that doesn't really yield interestin...

Market Analysis, Case Study, solution

Customers Shower buyers fall in three pricing segments: premium, standard and value. First, premium segment is conducted of people who mainly shop in showrooms. Their focus is on great service and high performance. Second segment is called standard. Customers in this segment rely on plumber recommendation and emphasize performance and service. Value segment conducts mainly customers who are primarily concerned with convenience and price. Thus, they like to avoid excavation and also tend to rely on independent plumber in selecting a product. Value segment falls in with DIY market, where people tend to buy in large retail shops , interested mainly in inexpensive models that are easy to install and they are also strongly price sensitive . Channel Main three channels of distribution are Trade shops, Showrooms and DIY Sheds. It is evident that Do-it-Yourself Sheds are dominant in sales for Electric Showers (550.000 units) , which are cheap and easy to install and designed for mas...

Bathroom upgrade that's almost as fast as a quick shower

It is not uncommon to purchase a home and get a bathroom that is a horror: avocado green tub , pink wall tile or maybe an old, white sink. The rest of the house may have charm and character, but you can't imagine living with this outdated bathroom. However, renovating a bathroom can be costly, especially if you decide to gut the room and start over. While some bathrooms do require a total renovation, most don't require that at all. Most have "good bones" and can be renovated effectively without spending a small fortune, said Dimitris Nacopoulos, owner of Bath Planet of Chicagoland, based in Streamwood. One option to consider is the use of an acrylic bath and wall system, also known as a bath liner. If you haven't investigated one in awhile, look again. They have come a long way in terms of looks and design and they are made nearby in Palatine, employing local workers . Many Bath Planet products install right over the existing ugly wall t...

How to mimic a window in your bathtub/shower renovation

Image
This tub is being replaced with a walk-in shower. What’’s the best thing to do about the stained-glass window? (Robin Pattison) We are about to remodel our master bath, and we’re wondering what to do with the round stained-glass window over the current tub. We want to remove the tub and have a large shower put in its place. I would love to keep the stained glass. However, as it’s not energy efficient, I would like to have an insulated window put in its place. At your website, I read an article about placing a stained-glass panel in front of an existing window. I was not sure if this could be done in a shower or if the stained-glass window can be removed without damage. What are your thoughts on this issue? What other tips do you have about this big project? — Robin P., Carrollton, Tex . I’m about to embark on my own bathroom-remodel project, but I don’t have to solve a window problem like you do. My challenge is to fix all the wasted space in my basement bathroom, the result of poo...
