How to buy a bathtub

Image
Whether ritualistic, religious or curative, bathing has always been about more than just personal hygiene, and the modern bathroom is no exception. Not just a functional space, it’s a haven to retreat to after a hard day, somewhere to relax mind and body. The bath is the focal point, so it makes sense to choose one that’s beautiful as well as useful. But with hundreds of shapes, styles and materials available, where do you start? Don’t get into a lather – we’ve found the hottest tubs to suit every budget. Before you buy a bath ‘Never buy a bath on a whim,’ warns Jonathan Carter , marketing manager at Victoria & Albert . ‘To ensure you’re happy with your investment, reserve time for choosing the right one.’ The first things to consider are space and budget, and how much of each you have. As a general rule, a freestanding bath will take up more inches and more pennies than a built-in number. Combined bath and shower Think about who will be using your new bath and in which way. ‘Showe...

BOAT TEST - Integrity 440 - Additional Integrity

Image
That this new, slightly larger boat closely follows the theme established by the 380 should be no surprise perhaps because the Integrity 380 Sedan is quite a success story. Widely acclaimed, it continues to sell very well indeed and will of course continue alongside its younger sibling. The numbers aren’t remarkable. The new Integrity 440 Sedan is all of 2.3 metres longer at 13.8 metres (LOA) to the 380’s 11.5. Beam has increased only200mm from 4.1 to 4.3 metres and while this doesn’t seem much on paper, for those familiar with the 380, how much more space there is inside the 440 comes as a surprise. In fact, the most profound change in the 440 Sedan has probably gone unnoticed. This would be the raising of the deck level to increase headroom “downstairs” in the two staterooms and the bathroom. Surprisingly, the 440’s overall height hasn’t increased significantly– which is an important point for people based somewhere like the Gold Coast where bridge clearance can certainly be an issue...

The Great Escape

Image
Photographer: Norman’s Photographic The Ford EcoBoost made easy work of towing the Escape fifth-wheel. This compact combo is ready for adventure. A molded fiberglass body seals this unique, fully equipped fifth-wheel from the elements while projecting an aura of durability and adventure “Bigger is better,” seems to be the mantra these days, as the RV industry responds to consumer demands for trailers and fifth-wheels with high-livability factors. Lightweight materials and modern building practices have allowed manufacturers to churn out a plethora of larger trailers that not long ago would have enthusiasts scratching their heads as to the wisdom of such lengths. Not everyone wants big, but few want to sacrifice livability, comfort and quality. Those who gravitate to smaller trailers are usually more adventurous and relish destination freedom or simply are not enamored with material things and opulence. Escape Trailer Industries in Chilliwack, British Columbia, thinks it can satis...

How to Make a Relatively Sweet Shower – Cheap

Image
Our new shower – for the duration of this trip So the Mustache family is now happily living in the little vacation suite I built for us with the indispensable help of my friend and host Johnny Aloha . There are still some finishing touches to add (including paint), but for the most part everything works now. The nicest part of this place is the shower, which you can see there in the picture on the left. Ooh, ahh.. looks cozy, doesn’t it? Well I like it, anyway, and I wanted to build something that would serve as a centerpiece to this future rental unit that would anchor it in the luxury market and thus allow it to earn higher rents forever . The cool part is, it didn’t really cost much to build. Those floor-to- ceiling travertine tiles , dark slate, river rock floor stones , and even the handle and valve set were all found on Craigslist at a deep discount. The shampoo nook which keeps your wife’s shaving razors from messing with your personal space is just a few extra cuts on the tile...

Out Of The Tub, Into The Shower

As Options Increase, Custom Showers Are Replacing Fancy Tubs In Popularity. September 8, 2002 | By Molly Millett, Saint Paul Pioneer Press Showering isn't just about getting clean anymore. Instead, it's therapy. "It's not just a shower. It's a mood enhancer," says Gary Pember, Moen's group product manager for the bath. "Where people used to go to a spa to pamper themselves, now they want to integrate those features into their own homes. It's part of looking at the whole therapeutic value to water. Today's shower does a whole lot of things for the psyche." Homeowners can now choose custom shower features that include steam units (with aromatherapy options); body sprays along the walls that make the shower feel like a "vertical whirlpool"; larger and multiple showerheads that offer settings ranging from a misting rain to a hydromassage, and some that even offer mood lighting ; shower benches and built-in storage space for sham...

Turn your bathroom into a pamperdome

Kylie Minogue talked about “Toto toilets” on TV talent show The Voice, so maybe the Aussie singer with the famously pert bottom favours the Toto Washlet, the Japanese “wash-and-dry” loo, which gives you a gentle rinse and a pulse of warm air. Try one out for yourself at one of CP Hart’s über- cool London bathroom showrooms , where the latest models are installed in the customer toilets. Don’t be shy. Bells-and-whistles loos are just one of the new-tech ideas at a burgeoning band of London bathroom specialists , where the average starting spend on a makeover is £8,000 to £10,000. “This might buy you a freestanding bath , separate shower/wet area and screen, WC, basin, vanity unit, mirror, tiling, and heating — but these are only very rough guidelines,” says Ripples, another leading London outfit , founded by Roger and Sandra Kyme in 1988, with four branches — in NW3 (020 7449 9594),  Chelsea (020 7373 3668), Richmond (020 3166 4008) and Reigate (01737 226450).
