What direction should bathroom sink taps turn?

I know, silly question time . As the title says, what way should you turn a sink tap to switch on/off? I'm talking about the traditional type of tap, seperate one for hot and one for cold ( cross head type ), not mixer type taps . http://i31.twenga.com/garden-diy/tap...230704352b.jpg I have checked google but seem to be getting conflicting advice. Mine are wrong at home but I am so used to them I now can't remember what way they are meant to turn. My taps are hot left, cold right. To turn them on I have to turn the hot tap clockwise and the cold tap anti-clockwise .

Hi, I have a Bathtub Shower Valve that is not working. (The middle one that turns the Shower head on) I would like to know how to remove it from the wall. I bought the Wrench Socket set for it already. It is an American Stanard Faucet (about 20 years old). 1. I unscrewed the Cap (covering the screw) 2. I removed the screw Now, I thought that I was supposed to just pull the handle off. It seems to be stuck or am I supposed to remove something else? Also, do I have to turn off the main water supply ? or do I just shut the hot and cold knobs in the shower? Thanks for your help.
