Savoring a small kitchen: Design tips for elbow room, easy access (before, after photos)

Like a great recipe, each ingredient matters when designing a workable kitchen. The need to make smart choices multiplies when it's a small kitchen that needs to be efficient and pretty. A smooth work flow , ample storage and every needed thing within reach make the busiest room in the house a pleasure to be in, rather than a chore. To learn how to make the most of a compact kitchen, we turned to Linda Blackwood of Interiors by Blackwood. In one cabinet, a mixer can be pulled up when needed with a counter space for rolling out pastry. Here, deep, 36-inch- wide drawers store bakeware .  For another client, an antique collector , Blackwood is updating a century-old Mediterranean-style house. The kitchen, which is 112...

They can be designed without a threshold — which look more contemporary and are easier for people to use as they get older. “People really like the bigger showers . They like that there’s elbow room,” said Susie Johnson, a real-estate agent with Coldwell Banker Gundaker in St. Louis. Meanwhile, comments she hears from prospective buyers about whirlpool tubs when walking through a property are often along the lines of: “That’s a nice tub but I don’t take baths,” she said. ...

How to cool down on a hot day

Image
The bulk of Australia is once again bracing for a scorching heatwave. Not all of us have the luxury of airconditioning ... some of us have to make do with alternative methods. WITHOUT stating the bleeding obvious, it is hellishly hot in some parts of Australia at the moment. And unfortunately, not all of us are lucky enough to live in palatial mansions with airconditioning units. As such we’ve compiled some ‘hacks’ that will keep you cool during this heatwave. This basset hound knows where it’s at. Picture: iStock Source: istock Make the most of your fan (if you have one) * It’s important to remember that a fan will cool your body, but not a room — so don’t leave it switched on when you’re out of the room. * To boost the effectiveness of the fan, spritz your face with cold water from a water bottle before sitting in front of the fan. * You can also place a tray of ice in front of the fan for an extra icy blast ( Apartment Therapy shows how it’s done). * It’s also a good idea (if it’s...
