LONDON-The Perseid meteor shower has been seen over parts of the UK, giving stargazers the opportunity to spot scores of shooting stars in the sky. The shower was due to peak in the UK on Saturday night, in a display also visible in other parts of the world. Stargazers took to social media to say they had seen the display, in which 100 meteors had been expected an hour. The Perseid meteor shower occurs every July and August as the Earth passes debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet. Former England cricketer Paul Collingwood was among those who attempted to spot the meteors. He tweeted that the shower had been “impressive”. SKYGAZERS were treated to a spectacular display of celestial fireworks as the Earth flew through a cloud of cometary dust. The Perseid meteors , shed by comet Swift-Tuttle, stage their show every August and are among the brightest of all shooting stars. A clear sky on Saturday night into Sunday gave most parts of the UK an opportunity to spot the meteors, said Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna . According to Space, typically there are about 80 meteors an hour, although last year saw between 150-200 meteors an hour. While this year’s peak is expected around 1 pm ET on August 12, meaning the night before and the night after should have good viewing rates , Space recommends the predawn hours of August 12 for the best show. And while last August saw “an outburst year” when it comes to the shower, this year is expected to be a little more difficult to see due to the presence of the moon, “which will be three-quarters full and will rise shortly before the shower hits its peak around midnight local time ,” reports Space.
