Glass shower screen spontaneously exploded whilst baby was in the bath

One-year-old escaped serious injury but was left with cuts

A mum is highlighting the dangers of glass shower screens to other parents after one exploded raining shards of glass down on her baby.

Just like she has done previously Stacy Richards was bathing her one-year-old daughter Elsieè-Maie, when there was a sound "like a gun shot" and the shower screen exploded.

Elsieè-Maie, was left screaming covered in cuts as the broken glass covered the bathroom.

Now Stacy, 24, wants to warn others of the dangers, speaking to the Daily Post, she said: "Last night, I was giving Elsieè-Maie a bath as normal, she was sat there playing and babbling away.

"Within a split second, it was like someone had fired a gun at the side of us, there was glass everywhere.

"Our glass shower screen had spontaneously exploded, never in my life have I moved so fast as I tried to shield her from being hurt.

Elsieè-Maie's dad came running in and grabbed her from me as I was shaking so much.

"My one-year-old was cut to shreds in what I can only explain as a freak incident. Elsieè-Maie was screaming, it was horrible, there was no warning," said Stacy from Prestatyn in North Wales.

Elsieè-Maie was left with around a dozen cuts to her body, one on her head, her back, arms and legs but mum Stacy said it "could have been a lot worse."

She is now warning of the dangers of shower screens and urged other parents to make sure theirs are not cracked or damaged.

"There was nothing wrong with our shower screen, it wasn't cracked or chipped and yet this still happened," she said.

"From what we've been reading on the internet, it's quite a common fault with these kind of shower screens, so why they are allowed to still be used is beyond me.

"I keep thinking what if Elsieè-Maie had been stood on the outside of the bath? It could have been a lot worse, it doesn't bear thinking about.

"When I tucked her up in bed last night, she was very unsettled and kept waking up crying.

"I just want to make people aware as I would hate for another baby to go through this."

What can you do if you have concerns about your shower screen?

It is not really known why glass shower screens are spontaneously exploding but there are similar stories all over the internet.

If your glass shower screen is damaged replace it immediately or if you have concerns get a qualified glass technician to take a look at it.

One glass expert has recommended putting a protective film over tempered glass surfaces to prevent them exploding at you.

It is probably a good idea to get someone who knows what they are doing to do this.
