The woman is said to have been 'heavily bleeding' after suffering several blows and died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria.

Her 80-year-old British partner - who is being held in connection with her death - was said to have been sat on the sofa watching TV when officers stormed into his home in the early hours of Friday morning.

Spanish newspaper La Provincia reports the man resisted arrest and assaulted at least one police officer. He could face a either a charge of domestic violence or homicide depending on the cause of death established by autopsy.

Police said there had been no previous allegations of violence between the couple - who have not yet been named.

The man is due to appear in court later today or tomorrow.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, the police force investigating, said: “At 12.45am yesterday, local police in Mogan responded initially after being alerted to a 999 call about an alleged assault which had occurred at a property in the municipality.

“The initial police response focused on assisting the victim and subsequently detaining the alleged aggressor who was immediately handed over to the Guardia Civil in Mogan.

“The victim, a foreign woman aged 47 who lives in the Canary Islands, was taken to Arguineguin Health Centre before being transferred to the Gran Canaria Insular Hospital in the capital Las Palmas where she died yesterday morning/on Friday morning.

“Up until now, and pending the oficial result of the autopsy, it has not been possible to determine the exact causes of her death, and whether her death is linked to the possible assault.

“The arrested man, who is 80 and whose initials are J.B and also a foreign man living in the Canary Islands, is also being held on suspicion of undermining the authority of the law relating to an act of ‘active resistance’ at the Guardia Civil station in Puerto Rico.”

The couple are said to have lived at the Bahia Azul apartment complex in the popular resort of Mogan, in the south-west of Gran Canaria, for several years.

The sea view apartments currently go on the market for around £120,000.

Mogan is a popular resort among British holidaymakers and ex-pats on Gran Canaria, the largest of the Canary Islands.
