A bathroom that works for everyone

Designing washrooms for multi-ability use is a sensitive process and the influx of products combining style and substance means architects are spoilt for choice. Lisa Ward of Bristan offers expert guidance When planning a residential development, architects face the challenge of appealing to the widest possible audience. While research may be carried out among potential buyers, it’s often impossible to determine the profile of the occupants and their needs. Some properties will be targeted to a certain market – like city penthouse apartments and retirement homes – but for standard developments, one size must ultimately fit all. When looking at standard housing, it’s crucial to secure the broadest possible appeal. In terms of achieving this, the bathroom is second only to the kitchen as the hub of a home and has the potential to provide a serious selling point. However, a proportion of potential buyers are likely to find conventional bathroom products and layouts difficult to negoti...

Turn your bathroom into a pamperdome

Kylie Minogue talked about “Toto toilets” on TV talent show The Voice, so maybe the Aussie singer with the famously pert bottom favours the Toto Washlet, the Japanese “wash-and-dry” loo, which gives you a gentle rinse and a pulse of warm air. Try one out for yourself at one of CP Hart’s über- cool London bathroom showrooms , where the latest models are installed in the customer toilets. Don’t be shy. Bells-and-whistles loos are just one of the new-tech ideas at a burgeoning band of London bathroom specialists , where the average starting spend on a makeover is £8,000 to £10,000. “This might buy you a freestanding bath , separate shower/wet area and screen, WC, basin, vanity unit, mirror, tiling, and heating — but these are only very rough guidelines,” says Ripples, another leading London outfit , founded by Roger and Sandra Kyme in 1988, with four branches — in NW3 (020 7449 9594),  Chelsea (020 7373 3668), Richmond (020 3166 4008) and Reigate (01737 226450). Small kitchens: Solutions

(Click on gallery images to view larger picture ) Susie Hammond wanted to make better use of the space in her small bathroom and separate WC, so she hired a designer to combine the two rooms into one. Fact File The owner: Susie Hammond, an IT management consultant The property: A top-floor, two- bedroom apartment built about ten years ago. Susie has lived here since 2002 The location: North-west London What she spent: Around £12,300 The problem ‘Quite small and basic, the bathroom was a typical new-build finish, with virtually no storage space at all. My apartment had only been built about ten years ago, but the layout of many of the rooms just wasn’t practical. Even though the bathroom already had a toilet in it, there was also a separate one next door, which was very long and narrow. The flat is also on the top floor of the building, so all the walls slope inwards , making the rooms look and feel that much smaller.’ What I did ‘I knew there was potential to make better use of t...

Let the good times flow in the bathroom

We are a nation of shower lovers, but standing exposed in a stream of water, we expect a vibrant, effective, sensory experience. Matching your shower to the water system in your home, will ensure sensory pleasure over a damp squib. Gravity- fed mixer showers : Traditional mixer showers use the same water that feeds your kitchen, laundry and bathroom. With part of the water descending from the cold-storage tank and mixing with water from the hot-water storage, the weight of water will depend on where the loft tank is in relation to the shower head. Have your plumber determine if an extra pump will be needed to avoid a feeble spit from the ‘head’ of water: 0.5bar is the minimum for anything approaching an invigorating feed — 3-4m distance between shower head and tank should be enough. Shower pumps for gravity-fed, low pressure: To opt into the luxury of say a tower shower ( added directional jets from an upright column) demands pressure. Pumps deliver more water per minute through ...

Norwegian Epic July 2017 - Rome Embarkation - Norwegian (NCL) Review

This was my first time traveling with Norwegian, and first time ever in Europe with one of my best friends. I had only ever traveled with Carnival before, so I was very impressed with the interior of the ship and it's overall size; much larger and more extravagant on the inside. Very detailed, many places to eat, really good layout. We had a few issues on board. For starters, we found out days later that our steward was supposed to come to our room to introduce himself and show us around our room, how everything worked. That never happened. 7 days on the ship and never met him. We also had issues receiving our tickets for our shore excursion s. We booked all three of our excursions with Norwegian, and every single time, we had to go downstairs to the excursion desk to get copies of our tickets, as our steward could never bring them to our room on time. We actually never got our tickets for our last excursion. We had to get a pamphlet with the shore excursion meeting times and Mor...

How to Help with Bathing and Personal Hygiene: Top Tips from Caregivers

As your loved one gets older, their changing mental status and physical condition may lead to some significant alterations in their daily habits. One of the biggest issues that many families experience is a serious lapse in their loved ones’ desire and ability to maintain their personal hygiene. It’s true that most seniors don’t necessarily need to bathe as often due to their sensitive skin and relatively low activity levels , but semi-regular washing is crucial for their health and your sanity. Little or no attention to certain “hot spot” areas can contribute to urinary tract infections , and accumulated bodily oils , bacteria and dirt can cause rashes, irritaiton and skin diseases. Worst of all, a loved one’s odor can become unbearable and embarrassing for you and your family. When it comes to bathing and showering, there is usually a deeper cause for a loved one’s refusal to wash up than just “not wanting to.” Bathrooms are notoriously slick and hard, so for a senior who is not st...
