Amid outcry over hotel’s signs singling out Jews, Swiss lawmaker raps Israel for tolerating haredim

The pool at the Paradies Arosa hotel (Screenshot from Paradies Arosa ) (JTA) — Commenting on a public outcry over signs that urged Jews at a Swiss hotel to shower before entering the pool, a state lawmaker from Geneva said “Israel should apologize for its excessive tolerance of ultra-Orthodox Jews who prevent peace in Palestine.” Roger Deneys, a Socialist representative at the Grand Council of Geneva, made the assertion Wednesday on Facebook. Deneys deleted his comment shortly after posting it and apologized for having written “nonsense,” the online edition of the Swiss Le Matin daily reported  Thursday . Over the weekend, signs placed at the Paradise Apartments in Arosa, some 80 miles southeast of Zurich, urged “Jewish guests” to shower before entering the pool and access a refrigerator at set times. Observant Jews who were staying at the hotel stored kosher food in the hotel refrigerator . The  signs generated a storm of criticism, including by the Simon Wiesenthal Center , at wh

See how this Chestnut Hill Tudor Revival was transformed with a global eye for design

Image
“Every piece of art has a story,” says interior designer Vani Sayeed as she scans the walls of the house in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where she worked with clients who had recently returned from 10 years overseas. As an artist involved in printmaking and painting, Sayeed could relate to the couple’s emotional connection to their collection, which had largely been amassed during their time living in Hong Kong and London with their two children, who are now teenagers. That understanding helped Sayeed and homeowner Judi Rosensweig relate as designer and client, but also as world travelers and moms. “We had many overlapping connections,” says the designer, who grew up in India and frequently visits there with her own young children. “I could tell where she was coming from. They wanted a global aesthetic that reflected their tastes and travels, and I got that.” The design direction was to create a layered look so that the decor seemed collected over time. If you need a few reasons to stay as far away from drugs as possible, all of these horrible stories should pretty much do the trick. Some are a little graphic, so consider this your official warning before proceeding. BATH SALTS: “Not for human consumption” is usually a trigger in the mind of an addict. It tells them that the product is indeed made for human consumption, and may even taste good. Bath salts are known to provide abusers with a gnarly high and vivid hallucinations. Here are a few other side effects, according to your local news. Mustachioed Bath Salts Aficionado Breaks into Home and Puts Christmas Decorations Up Terry Trent had a helping of bath salts one lonely October night in 2011 and, feeling a bit merry, he broke into a family home and adorned the it with Christmas decor . Armed with a pocket knife, he lit two candles and hung a wreath on the garage door. The youngest in the family found Trent sitting on the living room couch , probably watching “The Santa Claus

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Speaker Joe Straus deadlocked over "bathroom bill"

Editor's note: This story has been updated throughout. The Texas Legislature appears to be at a stalemate on a “bathroom bill” that could push the legislative session into overtime. Refusing to go any further to regulate bathroom use for transgender Texans, House Speaker Joe Straus said Friday that the Senate can take or leave a proposed compromise it passed on Sunday — to which Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick later responded with a resounding no. With the clock ticking on the legislative session, Straus said on Friday that the House will not appoint members to negotiate with the Senate on its proposed compromise on a “bathroom bill.” The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one. “For many of us — and especially for me — this was a compromise,” Straus said at a Friday news conference . “As far as I’m concerned, it was enough. We will go no further. This is the right thing to do in order to protect our economy from billions of dollars in losses and more importantly to protect the safety

Stay in a Tiny Shingled Cabin in Austria That Resembles a Bird-Like UFO

Set on a hilly incline and designed by architects Peter and Lukas Jungmann, the cabin appears to hover above ground like some sort of alien object—a stark contrast to its pastoral environment and the traditional Austrian chalets that surround it.  Tiny Shingled Cabin in Austria That Resembles a Bird-Like UFO - Photo 1 of 11 -" /> Because of its irregular, otherworldly form, and how it seems to be suspended in midair, the cabin was named "Ufogel," which is a melding of the acronym UFO and "vogel," meaning bird in German.  Tiny Shingled Cabin in Austria That Resembles a Bird-Like UFO - Photo 2 of 11 -" /> Available for rent through Urlaubsarchitektur, Ufogel’s exterior is covered in rustic Austrian-style shingles, but its sharp angles and asymmetrical shape gives it a distinctly futuristic, nest-like look.  Tiny Shingled Cabin in Austria That Resembles a Bird-Like UFO - Photo 3 of 11 -" /> Within, the split-level, 485-square- foot space acc

Short Horror Stories - The Shower Curtain

She walked into the bathroom. The reflection of her pale skin shone . The dark circles created the illuson of black eyes. Her hair was a mess due to the following night. That night was the worst with the noises waking her up. She and her cat are the only people in her apartment. She opened the cupboard to reach for her toothbrush and toothpaste. She was so tired she nearly missed. The shower curtain hung like drapes beside her, making her feel closed in. She cosed the cupboard and dropped her toothbrush. There was someone or something standing behind her in the mirror. She swung around fast, but saw no one. There was nothing that could have given that illusion. She let out a sigh of relief and turned back to the mirror slowly. There was nothing in the mirror this time. She hesitated but the brushed her teeth. The thought still crossed her mind of the figure, but then let it slip away. She thought it was becuse of the lack of sleep. She continued to feel uneasy. As if someone

Shower Solutions | Kitchen Bath Design

Building Sep 10, 2009   Share Shower and bath manufacturers are touting eco-friendly advances that won’t sacrifice the spa-like feel. These days, the value of the bath as a haven increases exponentially . Of course water becomes critical to creating a spa-like space that promotes relaxation, and that means showers and tubs take center stage. With shower systems and soaking tubs, there’s no question that people like plenty of water to wash away their cares and stresses. But at the same time, the green trend that promotes water and energy conservation is also impacting design and product trends . With two seemingly disparate trends at play, there’s some debate about what consumers want. “It’s about wellness and rejuvenation,” says Mike Reffner, group product manager for Moen, in North Olmsted, OH. “Consumers [want] an experience that’s spa-like – a bath experience that is a mini-escape.” Lars Christensen, senior product manager for Hansgrohe, in Alpharetta, GA, says that “gree
